Welcome to the final session of ScriptRemix!
In this one, we’re going to focus on your story’s theme, how to pitch your ideas, and script development.
Part 1: Theme and Subject
Communicating your work to others is an essential part of the creative process. In order to do this, you must know what your work is about (its subject) and what questions it asks (its theme). Theme and subject are often used interchangeably, but they are definitely not the same thing! Watch the following video to learn more about what theme and subject really mean and how important they are for clearly communication the heart of your work.
EXERCISE: Identify Your Theme and Subject (15 minutes)
Make 2 columns on a piece of paper. Title your columns “What” and “Why.”
In the “What” column: put on your timer for 5 minutes and jot down at least 3 things your piece might be about.
In the “Why” column: put on your timer for 5 minutes and jot down at least 3 reasons you want to write this piece.
When you are finished, circle the words that resonate most for you. The “What” words will give you a clue about your subject, and the “Why” words will give you a clue about the theme.
Part 2: Pitching Your Ideas, Stories, and Scripts
In this video, we get into some details about how pitching for scripts works!
EXERCISE: Create a Logline/Elevator Pitch (20 minutes)
- Write a 2-sentence logline for your script idea that includes details about character, theme, story, and the overall aesthetics of the piece (how you want it to look). For tips on writing loglines, click here.
- Think about your background and experience, how it has led you to write this story, and how it might connect with an audience.
- Expand your logline into an elevator pitch and try it out on your friends. For tips on writing elevator pitches, click here.
