Each year, New Shoots: Nurturing Vancouver’s Teen Writers sends writer-mentors from the UBC School of Creative Writing into Vancouver School Board (VSB) high schools to lead creative writing workshops for classes and clubs.

The writer-mentors work with UBC faculty and VSB teachers to develop and facilitate hands-on workshops that run for 6 to 8 sessions. The workshops are tailored to include writing about growing up in Vancouver and inspire local teens to deepen their knowledge and try their hand at genres like poetry, screenwriting, comics, and short stories. Teen participants also submit their favourite writing to the New Shoots print anthology and have the chance to be published in a professional book.

New Shoots has been running for over 35 years. We have mentored thousands of students, and sprouted critically-acclaimed writers like Evelyn Lau, Kevin Chong, and Wayde Compton.
