Every spring, New Shoots holds a public reading featuring the student writers featured in our annual anthology, alongside professional and award-winning writers. This launch celebrates the hard work of all the teachers, mentors, and students who make New Shoots a success and gives us all a chance to hear the students’ work come to life!
False Creek Community Centre’s Tyee Hall hosted the 2018 Anthology Launch, where more than 20 students performed their work to an audience of 60 guests. Jen Sookfong Lee and Wayde Compton, both former New Shoots mentors, graced us with their presences and wonderful readings. Then we were further graced by readings from two of our New Shoots Mentors, Meagan Black and Andrew Dasselaar, and from our student writers. We heard poetry, fiction, nonfiction and even an excerpt from a play. So much talent and creative energy in one room made for a seriously beautiful event, an appropriate celebration for our seriously beautiful anthology. New Shoots students never cease to inspire those of us who have the honour of working with them and witnessing their work on the page or out loud.
Thank you to Emily Pohl-Weary, our UBC Faculty Supervisor of New Shoots, and to all the New Shoots teachers, students, families and friends who made this event such a success!
Thank you to the lovely Olga Holin for all of the photos of this event.
