This year’s New Shoots Anthology Launch was a wonderful celebration of student artwork and writing held at the gorgeous Trout Lake Community Centre. Students, teachers, UBC supervisors, mentors, and friends and family were in attendance to support the brave and talented anthology contributors who took the stage to share their work. In addition to the student readings and open mic, we were fortunate to hear a few words from Emily Pohl-Weary, this year’s New Shoots supervisor, who spoke about the importance of allowing and encouraging kids to pursue creative pathways. We also heard from former supervisor and anthology designer Tanya Kyi, who emphasized the value of writing as resistance and an outlet for individual expression in an age where AI is steadily encroaching on our daily lives.
It was an inspiring and invigorating night, and a great year-end sendoff for the students who poured their hearts into their poems, short stories, paintings, and drawings! A big thank you to everyone who attended the event to support this new generation of artists and writers.
