The pieces in this anthology are grounded – in places, in objects, people, situations. The poems “Kabul” and “Afghanistan 1994” mourn the places where people “wandered from one exile to another.” “Little Sister” is a humorous poem about the complicated relationship the speaker has with their younger sibling. The flash fiction piece “His Picture” problematizes a family’s celebratory photo shoot, where the narrator tries to focus all their energies on the grains of rice that surround them. “I remember…” is a long rumination on Chanukah lights.
