New Shoots 20

new shoots 20Marking the start of New Shoots’ second decade, this anthology is marked by the twists and turns in geography, relationships, and ideas. The poem “Distance” is a densely-packed poem about two squirrels fighting over food during winter. “Wood Badge” is a personal essay that reflects on the narrator’s time with Scouts Canada and the rigorous training he receives. “A Fairy Tale Gone Wrong” is an ironic rendition of a typical love story, with the Prince and Princess having “a wedding so fine / That they filed for bankruptcy / and signed on the dotted line.” “The Last Drop of Water” is a flash fiction piece about a life or death decision that will decide survival on a desert island. The poem “Time in Dusts” is a different take on the acrostic poem, where dust is embodied as death and shadows, among other thing.
