Marking the start of New Shoots’ second decade, this anthology is marked by the twists and turns in geography, relationships, and ideas. The poem “Distance” is a densely-packed poem about two squirrels fighting over food during winter. “Wood Badge” is a personal essay that reflects on the narrator’s time with Scouts Canada and the rigorous training he receives. “A Fairy Tale Gone Wrong” is an ironic rendition of a typical love story, with the Prince and Princess having “a wedding so fine / That they filed for bankruptcy / and signed on the dotted line.” “The Last Drop of Water” is a flash fiction piece about a life or death decision that will decide survival on a desert island. The poem “Time in Dusts” is a different take on the acrostic poem, where dust is embodied as death and shadows, among other thing.
