IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Session 4: Details and Revision

Welcome to session four! This session is about putting in sensory details and revising your work.

Part 1: Sensory Details

Lorna and Adrian talk about sensory details and offer a small writing exercise to practice your observational skills.

Resources

EXERCISE: Everything You See (and Hear, and Smell, and…) (20+ minutes)

This next exercise will help you think about all five senses.

Begin by writing down three specific places at which you have spent some time. It could be a moment, or maybe it’s somewhere familiar that you’ve been to many times.

Next, take about ten to fifteen minutes to go through the attached worksheet, paying attention to each of the prompts.

Once this is done, spend some more time on a free write about this place!

Part 2: Wielding the Red Pen

Lorna and Adrian talk through the revision process and how to get the most out of feedback.

Resources

EXERCISE: Revise (10-15 minutes)

Using what you’ve learned and practiced over these past few weeks, take some time to revise your “Worst Story Ever” exercise from session one. If you prefer, feel free to revise any other piece of writing from this course that speaks to you.

Part 3: Wrapping Up
