Each year, New Shoots publishes a compilation of student work in book form. New Shoots students—with the help of their instructors—brainstorm ideas and develop their work into polished submissions.
Learning to self-edit is an important skill every writer must acquire. The anthology teaches important lessons in this process.
When their writing is ready, students submit completed pieces to the anthology editors who proof the manuscript. Supervised by a VSB teacher, a team of secondary school students formats the anthology to book specifications. A VSB teacher picks out visual art to accompany the pieces, and there is a group vote on the cover image.
Each anthology is totally unique. Over the past 30 years, the program has produced dozens of stunning and evocative collections of student writing.
